Lately one of the roles I’ve enjoyed playing as managing editor for Selene River Press is making videos where I get to talk up some of my favorite SRP products. And in my latest video I get to talk up a cookbook that is very near and dear to my heart: The Slow Cook Gourmet by Phyllis Quinn.
Phyllis, who passed just this year, was a truly amazing woman. Through all of the incredible personal stories she poured into this book, you can just feel the love and warmth that imbued not just her food but also her life. Phyllis had the rare gift of making everything extra special.
One thing I love in particular about this cookbook is right in the title: you get to use your slow cooker. But don’t let the word “gourmet” fool you—each recipe is deceptively easy to prepare. And trust me, as a mom with three young kids who works full time, it can be hard to create delicious new meals for the family. We all know the dinnertime rut is real. We find ourselves cooking the same meals over and over again until the whole family is sick of them. And it’s all a vicious cycle—because these meals are all we know how to do, it’s all that we do! The Slow Cook Gourmet is a great way to combat the routine. Imagine using your slow cooker to make easy meals with gourmet ingredients and global touches. And imagine your kids loving them!
A lot of slow cooker meals I’ve tried in the past weren’t very healthy. A lot of them call for processed seasoning packets, condensed soups, and other “convenience” items that just aren’t very nutritious. Just because something is easy to make, if my kids are not getting the nutrients they need, it’s just not worth it. Phyllis makes it oh-so-easy with simple instructions that are hard to mess up. And it’s so great to know that I can get all these ingredients cooking right in my kitchen and then run around taking the kids to practices and all of their other endless activities.
Go watch my latest video, or see it below, so I can tell you all about my favorite recipe in The Slow Cook Gourmet. And after I’ve convinced you what a great purchase this is, don’t forget to grab some extras for family and friends because it also makes a wonderful gift.
