From nutritional and herbal supplementation to acupuncture protocols, traditional Chinese medicine has played an important role in healing for centuries. And now Chinese Medicine: Clinical Reference Guide integrates this body of knowledge with Western nutritional supplementation in one slim, essential tool. This is an ideal reference not only for practitioners of Chinese medicine but for all practitioners of natural medicine.
Authors Siamak F. Shirazi and Julie A. Shivley focus on treatments established by traditional Chinese medicine to address common imbalances within the paired organ systems of the body. They also include recommendations for nutritional and herbal supplementation, acupuncture protocols, and diet. You’ll find simple, foundational recipes designed to restore balance and health. And best of all, everything in this slim volume can be readily translated in your daily practice.
Throughout, Shirazi and Shivley adhere to one of the key philosophies of traditional Chinese medicine: “food as medicine.” Most medical schools in China have specific branches dedicated to the study of the healing effects of food and herbs—a concept that’s long been anathema in the West. But such attitudes are in decline, and many practitioners now understand the synergistic effects of recipes and formulations that can treat ailments with foods or imbalances with herbs.
This reference is a detailed guide through the five vital yin/yang organ pairs so integral to the practice of Chinese medicine: lung/large intestine; heart/small intestine; liver/gallbladder/spleen/stomach. Understanding these systems and how they relate to optimal health should be a priority for practitioners, and Chinese Medicine covers them in all their intricacies:
- Interrelationships
- Common Syndromes and Imbalances
- Signs and Symptoms Resulting from Imbalances
- Dietary Recommendations
- Nutritional and Herbal Supplement Recommendations
- Protocols
- General Acupuncture Treatment Recommendations
- Case Study with Treatment Plan
The remaining pages cover diet guidelines and specific recipes, as well as keys to guide you through recommended nutritional supplements from Standard Process and herbal supplements from MediHerb. The authors note that these two companies are known for their pure, high quality, whole food ingredients and strict standards of production.
For practitioners seeking to provide exceptional support in a busy practice, Chinese Medicine is destined to become a treasured daily resource and reference guide.
