Welcome to “The Royal Principles of Health,” written by Dr. Michael Dority and presented by Selene River Press. This fascinating series is based on the 33 principles of chiropractic identified by R.W. Stephenson, DC, PhC, in his 1927 classic Chiropractic Textbook. Dr. Dority calls these the “Royal Principles of Health” and invites you to learn how these foundational tenets illustrate the forces of universal intelligence that guide and determine our existence.
Mission Possible
Royal Principle #21 states: “The mission of Innate Intelligence is to maintain the material of the body of a ‘living thing’ in active organization.
“Mission possible!” This is the battle cry of Innate Intelligence to maintain functional order in our marvelously formed body. If communication between the cells of the brain and the body fails, the body cannot complete its functions. All adaptive changes in physiology are mediated through the nervous system, which travels to and fro in the spine. When successful, these adaptive changes—either positive and/or assumed negative—will become manifest in the body and produce symptoms of health or sickness.
As noted above, Principe #21 in R.W. Stephenson’s Chiropractic Textbook states the following: “The mission of Innate Intelligence is to maintain the material of the body of a ‘living thing’ in active organization.”
Innate is an unseen life force that connects our bodies to the building materials we are composed of. It organizes these materials into our various cells: bone, muscle, white blood, nerve, and on and on, creating who we are from conception on. Innate must work with the building materials it is provided with, by way of the foods our parents ate and the foods we eat every day. Innate controls and regulates all of these functions through our nervous system. Spinal subluxations create static in the free flow of nerve “talk” between the brain and body. Innate is so capable of regulating our health that we become aware of any disharmony by the expression of symptoms. We do not consciously tell our body to release digestive HCL, or sweat, or increase our heart rate.
Through Innate Intelligence, the brain talks to the body, and the body talks to the brain, and everything is kept in order. Our bodies talk to us through our symptoms. This is how we know we should seek to correct the issue causing the symptom.
When vertebral subluxations develop in the spine, it alters joint movement and creates disharmony in the body. This in turn represses the normal function of joint tissues and organs controlled by adjacent spinal nerves, and the expression of our health does not reach its full potential. The deficiency of joint movement and/or subluxation reduces brain stimulation from the joints and can even result in decreased brain function.
The relationship between joint movement, proprioception, the cerebellum, and homeostatic function of the brain is intimately intertwined. When joint motion is altered or lost, it has a negative impact on the stimulation of the central nervous system and modulation of body function. It is also widely accepted fact that spinal adjustments and exercise can restore joint motion and joint proprioception, resulting in greater communication between brain and body and thus increasing our health potential.
For many years now, research has shown the positive health benefits gained through chiropractic care and physical activity. Let’s look at the benefits of staying active. Progressively increasing our aerobic fitness progressively decreases the likelihood of developing myocardial infarction, nonfatal arrhythmia, incident angina pectoris, and sudden cardiac death. Aerobic exercise elevates blood levels of high density cholesterol-HDL, lowers blood pressure and resting heart rate, decreases platelet aggregability and vasoconstriction, and lowers LDL levels. Exercise reduces insulin resistance, which favorably affects cardiovascular health. Cardiovascular disease accounts for approximately 41–45 percent of all deaths and 30 percent of coronary heart disease. Risk of stroke can be lowered by two and a half hours of brisk walking per week.
However, the incidence and death rate from congestive heart failure is steadily increasing. Approximately 4.6 to 4.8 million Americans are diagnosed with congestive heart failure. Exercise promotes and enhances endothelial cell health in the vascular system. Endothelial cells form a single layer that lines all blood vessel walls and regulates exchanges of gases and nutrients between the bloodstream and surrounding tissues. The brain is hungry for oxygen 24/7. Life is in the blood, and our lives without the blood would be non-excitant, like being brain dead. Chiropractic spinal care, exercise, and vital nutrition is the elixir that grants a greater expression of health while reducing the risk to all causes of death.
I would like to share information that will encourage all to improve or maintain their health and well-being. It is related to us from Marcia Dority Baker, a certified ultra-running coach (and my daughter). I hope and pray that this will inspire a wellspring of hope and encouragement to all who are seeking a greater level of health. In the words of Lao Tzu, “A journey of a 1,000 miles begins with the first step.”
Let’s start today on our journey to health. I invite you to read about Marcia’s journey, which she relates in her own words:
“I have been a runner most of my life and value it more now than ever. I ran club track as a kid, then ran cross-country and track during high school. I started running as an adult when my daughter asked me to help her train for cross-country her freshman year of high school. Nine years later, I have moved from road races to ultra-running and found a new appreciation for what my body can accomplish. I train on my own for the most part. I really enjoy early morning runs while the world is asleep. Competing in races is fun, as I like to see my training plan complete when I cross the finish line. I am an advocate for service to the running community and volunteer to help at a local race each year.
“Over the years I have informally mentored other women starting out with running, so it is really exciting to launch my business, Dority Baker Coaching, LLC. I am a UESCA (United Endurance Sports Coaching Academy) certified ultra-running coach. I am proud of my trail running finishes: 100m (1), 100k (1), 50m (3), 50k (5) and a variety of other distances. I ran my first 100-mile race in October 2021. The mantra I use is, ‘Consistency beats intensity.’ It’s better to consistently practice activities than to try a ‘one and done’ intensive. I wrote an article for Trail Sisters on this topic.
“My nutrition is a long list I use for overall health and endurance running:
- Iplex
- Ferrofood
- Promaline Iodine
- Cataplex E2
- Supper-EFF
- Cataplex B-Core
- Bio-Dent
- Drenatrophin PMG
- Ostrophin PMG
- Ovatrophin P PMG
- Utrophin PMG
- Adrenal Desiccated
- Calcium Lactate Powder
- Min-Tran
- Pituitrophin PMG
- Cal-Amo
- Saligesic (MH)
- Thytrophin PMG
- Wheat Germ Oil
- Cal-Ma Plus
- Chlorophyll Complex
- Cataplex A-C-P
- Immuplex
- Phosfood Liquid
- Lactic Acid Yeast
“I have been taking most of the nutrition for years, as we started with SP in the late 1980s. I added the heart and blood nutrition in the last five to six years when I started training for ultras. I consistently run 150 miles a month unless training for a race, and then I increase to 180-ish a month. I added the Super-EFF, Cataplex B-Core, Wheat Germ Oil, Lactic Acid Yeast, and Ostrophin PMG after attending Dr. Lowell Keppel’s seminar in Omaha in March 2022. I routinely get my spine adjusted and NET-ed by my dad. My daily eating plan is high protein organically raised meats, eggs, cheeses, veggies, and fruits. I keep before me the words of Miguel de Cervantes, ‘Preparation is half the victory.’”
We have been given a miracle of life’s creation in the formation of our bodies. To live and move in it with health, we must take on the responsibility of its care. Take on the understanding that “the mission of Innate Intelligence is to maintain the material of the body of a ‘living thing’ in active organization.” Take a look online if you want to see the top causes of death in America.

Connect what you read to the top causes of death. We can save lives through our knowledge and skills. Increase your knowledge of the deadly spinal subluxation, which negatively impacts nerve communication in the body, as discussed in Essential Principles of Chiropractic by Virgil V. Strang. Become skilled in educating yourself and your patients. Visit Dr. James L. Chestnut’s Wellness Practice website and implement the knowledge from his books and classes.
People get sick for lack of knowledge. Don’t allow your education and talent for restoring health to your fellow human (humus) beings be underutilized and lost. We have two paths before us: the path of life and the path of sickness and death. We are innately led to follow the path of life and avoid the causes of an early death. A vital and wonderful guide to lead us all on our journey to health is Joseph Antell’s Adjuvant Protocols for Healing: A Practitioner’s Manual. It is a wonderful tool that will increase your knowledge and ability to help others return to health, as well as a guiding reference for your own self-care.
Let us consistently improve our skills for helping others enjoy greater health. This in turn improves our own health. We are blessed to be working in our “practice” in guiding and restoring greater health in humanity. Remember, “Consistency beats intensity.”
Some things to think about:
- Movement is life in action. Stay active.
- No matter how you feel; take action, don’t limit your life.
- Prepare today for success tomorrow.
“Talent without discipline is like an octopus on roller skates. There’s plenty of movement, but you never know if it’s going to be foreword, backwards, or sideways.”
